Abstract
In recent years cybercrime has emerged as one of the most significant challenges confronting modern societies worldwide. In India too the proliferation of digital technologies and increasing internet penetration have led to a steep rise in incidents such as hacking identity theft online fraud cyberstalking cyber-bullying and digital piracy. The existing legal framework — principally shaped by the Information Technology Act 2000 supplemented by various amendments and judicial interpretations — aims to curb such offences regulate digital behaviour and protect citizens’ rights in cyberspace. However questions remain regarding both the adequacy of the legal provisions and the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in actual implementation. This paper seeks to evaluate whether India’s cyber-law framework is sufficiently robust to counter contemporary cyberthreats and how effectively law enforcement mechanisms translate legislative intent into real-world prevention and prosecution.
