Abstract
The evolution of Indian nationalism between 1857 and 1947 represents one of the most dynamic and transformative phases in world history. From the first organized resistance during the Revolt of 1857 to the eventual attainment of independence in 1947 Indian nationalism evolved through multiple ideological social and cultural stages. This paper analyzes the historical trajectory of Indian nationalism focusing on the interplay of political awakening socio-religious reform mass movements and revolutionary activism. It traces how diverse strands—moderate extremist Gandhian and revolutionary—interacted to produce a unified struggle against British imperialism. The paper also highlights the role of marginalized groups women and peasants emphasizing that nationalism in India was not merely political but also a social and moral renaissance.
