    Abstract

    Income and wages in India’s rural areas form the backbone of the country’s socio-economic structure shaping the livelihood opportunities and developmental possibilities for nearly seventy percent of the population. Rural income patterns have historically been tied to agriculture but structural transformation technological progress and public welfare programs have diversified the sources of earning in rural households. Despite these changes stagnant agricultural productivity persistent wage inequalities gender-based disparities informal labor relations and seasonal fluctuations continue to limit income stability in rural regions.
