  • Industrial Debt Market in India: Unrealized Potential

    Abstract

    India’s industrial debt market represents one of the most critical yet significantly underdeveloped segments of the country’s financial architecture. While global financial systems rely heavily on deep liquid and diversified bond markets to fund industrial expansion infrastructure development corporate growth and long-term productivity India remains predominantly dependent on its banking sector for industrial financing. As a result industrial borrowers face constraints such as rising borrowing costs limited long-term financing avenues and cyclical credit tightening which impede large-scale industrialization and economic transformation. The industrial debt market in India—comprising corporate bonds debentures institutional borrowing instruments private placements and long-term infrastructure bonds—has shown growth over the past two decades yet it remains far below its true potential.
