Abstract

The rapid expansion of the platform economy has significantly transformed the nature of employment and labour relations across the world. In India digital platforms such as ride-hailing food delivery logistics and freelance service applications have created new opportunities for employment particularly among urban populations. Gig work has emerged as an important component of the contemporary labour market attracting millions of workers who seek flexible earning opportunities. However the growth of platform-based employment has also generated concerns regarding job security income instability social protection and workers’ rights. This study examines the transformation of informal labour through the expansion of the platform economy in urban India.
