  • Research on the Prevalence of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors among College Students

    Abstract

    The study investigates the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among college students a population known to be at increased risk for mental health challenges. Utilizing a cross-sectional survey design the research sampled over 10000 students from diverse institutions across the United States. The findings reveal that approximately 15% of respondents reported experiencing suicidal thoughts within the past year while 5% had engaged in self-harm and 2% had attempted suicide. The study also examines potential contributing factors including academic stress social isolation financial difficulties and pre-existing mental health conditions. Students identifying as LGBTQ+ as well as those from marginalized ethnic backgrounds reported higher rates of suicidal ideation and attempts. The research highlights the urgent need for targeted mental health services and proactive intervention strategies within college environments.
