  • Role of Panchayati Raj Institutions in Rural Development: Progress and Challenges

    Abstract

Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) form the cornerstone of decentralized governance in India facilitating rural development through participatory decision-making and localized administration. Since their constitutional recognition under the 73rd Amendment Act of 1992 PRIs have made significant strides in empowering rural communities and delivering essential services. However their effectiveness remains hindered by structural operational and socio-political challenges. This paper examines the evolution of PRIs their role in rural development and the challenges they face in fulfilling their mandate. Through an analysis of case studies government policies and socio-economic indicators the study provides recommendations for strengthening PRIs as engines of rural development.
