  • The Economic and Social Situation of Banaras Weavers: A Case Study

    Abstract

    This study examines the economic and social conditions of the Banaras weavers a traditional community known for producing the iconic Banarasi silk sarees. The research explores the challenges faced by these artisans including the impact of modernization competition from machine-made textiles and the changing dynamics of global markets. Through a combination of qualitative interviews and quantitative data analysis the study reveals a decline in the traditional weaving industry leading to economic hardships and social implications for the weaver community. Factors such as decreasing demand lack of adequate financial support and exploitation by middlemen have compounded the struggles of the weavers pushing many to abandon their craft or migrate for better opportunities. The study also highlights the resilience of the community and ongoing efforts to preserve this cultural heritage.
