    The economic and social situation of Banaras weavers represents a complex intersection of traditional craftsmanship generational occupational structures modern market forces technological disruptions and systemic socio-economic vulnerabilities that have shaped the livelihood of weaving communities for centuries. These artisans form the backbone of India’s celebrated handloom heritage yet they remain among the most economically marginalised groups due to shrinking market opportunities unstable income patterns increasing mechanisation inadequate government intervention and persistent dependence on informal actors in the value chain.
