Abstract

The gig economy has emerged as a transformative force in the global labor market offering flexible employment opportunities beyond traditional jobs. In India the expansion of digital platforms internet penetration and smartphone accessibility have enabled the gig economy to reach rural areas creating new employment avenues. While it provides economic opportunities for rural workers by bridging the urban-rural employment divide it also presents challenges related to job security income instability and the absence of labor protections. This research paper explores the growth of the gig economy in rural India highlighting its potential to revolutionize employment patterns while addressing the socio-economic challenges it poses. By examining case studies policy interventions and future trends this study evaluates the sustainability of the gig economy in India’s rural landscape.
