Abstract
The crux of the issue has often translated into a yawning chasm between the citizens and the legal system. It is hoped that this research paper will argue why compulsory legal education should be an indispensable step toward citizen empowerment and the strengthening of democracy at large. The paper discusses the contemporary position of legal education in India and unmasks systemic shortcomings and impediments towards effective legal literacy particularly among subaltern sectors. It pays reference to successful models of legal education elsewhere and describes how and why legal studies should be incorporated into the national curriculum at all levels- from primary education to higher education. The author emphasizes again that legal education should foster civic engagement combat exploitation and ensure that justice is served.
