Abstract

Folklore and oral traditions are essential mediums through which communities preserve transmit and reimagine their cultural memory. As collective expressions rooted in lived experiences rituals and narratives they function as repositories of historical consciousness social norms and communal identities. This paper explores the multifaceted role of folklore and oral traditions in sustaining cultural memory across generations particularly in societies where written documentation was historically limited or inaccessible. Drawing upon examples from indigenous communities rural societies and postcolonial contexts the study highlights how oral narratives—ranging from myths and legends to proverbs songs and storytelling—serve as tools for resistance resilience and renewal. While globalization urbanization and digital media pose challenges to the continuity of oral traditions they also offer new avenues for revival and adaptive preservation.
