Abstract
The exponential growth of information in our digital era is putting a strain on the library resources that was hitherto accessible to us. As a result of vendor closed-access philosophy and ever-shrinking budgets libraries are seeking alternatives to proprietary software. Open source software (OSS) allows libraries and information centers to save money while staying current with technological needs. Its use as a methodology for creating software continues to skyrocket. The research presents the pros and cons of using an open source technology. Emphasizing open source open access and open standard practices helps to highlight how important it is for the library sector to be transparent and accessible. In addition when creating a digital library with limited resources open source software is preferable than commercial software.
